Bamboo is one of the fastest-growing plants in the world. In home gardens, bamboo is generally used for borders or accents to a large yard. Bamboo also is used as an indoor potted plant and kept short. It is often trained to take different twisting and curling shapes. Whatever your purpose, you can cut an existing bamboo stalk to make a new plant. Consider taking several cuttings to ensure at least one successful and healthy new plant.
Select the bamboo from which to cut. Choose a tall stalk in a healthy clump of bamboo that is younger than 3 years old.
Take a cutting from the middle of the stalk. You need at least two full internodes in the middle of the cutting and two half internodes on either end. An internode is the small section between two nodes (the horizontal rings on bamboo stalks). Use a sharp knife to carefully cut your cutting.
Plant your bamboo cutting immediately. Light sandy soil is best in an indoor container with drainage holes. Place the cutting vertically into the soil so that one node is above the soil. Place the container by a sunny window.
Seal the top edge of the bamboo with moist clay. Do not cover the opening, just along the edge. They clay will help protect the cutting.
Water with 2 cups of water and keep the cutting moist until green shoots start to sprout from the nodes. Wait until the bamboo is well established to transplant outdoors, usually a couple months. Transplant only in warm weather.
