Hi this is Yolanda Vanveen and in this segment we're going to talk about how to create an above ground organic vegetable garden. Now vegetable gardens can be grown pretty much anywhere there's sunlight. So even if you have a small deck or you have a small patio and you live in the city, you can still have your own vegetable garden. And even by creating a small raised bed, even maybe only three feet by three feet, you can still create a gorgeous organic vegetable garden. And the key with organic is to use only organic materials. And so don't use any pesticides or chemicals or fertilizers. Just use good composted organic materials or potting soil as your base. And you can always put a little bit of bark dust on the top too. But you don't want to add any fertilizers because usually the compost is enough nutrition for your vegetables. I don't like the chemicals in the ground anyway because you're going to eat your vegetables and you don't want to eat the chemicals that can be absorbed as they grow. So an easy way to grow an above the ground vegetable garden is to get just some cement blocks and just put them in a circular pattern or you could make them into a square and just build them up. You don't need cement, you don't need anything else, just a few cement blocks. Fill it with some organic materials, some good compost and then start your vegetable seeds as soon as the last frost. And that's usually not until March or April and if you live in a warmer climate, start them in the middle of the winter. But vegetables can be grown nearly year round if you live in a warm climate. And if you live in a cold climate, I've found a lot of vegetables will start even if you grow them as late as June. So to grow an organic garden, is to just grow it naturally. And don't use any chemicals and instead of killing the slugs with slug bait, just put a piece of cardboard out and you'll find that slugs will grab onto the cardboard at night and you can just throw that cardboard away or throw it in a bucket of water. And that way you don't need to use any chemicals at all. And you can enjoy your vegetable garden. And you can change it out and add different vegetables from year to year. And even if live in a very small spot, you can still enjoy vegetables.
