By Pamela Gardapee

Kentucky has consistent rainfall and warm summers, making it an ideal area for growing apples. Apple orchards are common throughout Kentucky. When you start planning an orchard or you want to plant an apple tree in the backyard, know which varieties are successfully grown in Kentucky.

Gala Apples

Gala apples are juicy and crispy with light red skins and greenish tones. Gala apples have a taste of sour and sweet, making it a desirable apple for eating, baking and canning. The harvest time for the gala apple in Kentucky is August. Gala apples are highly susceptible to fire blight. The trees reach a mature height of 15 feet. Gala apple trees are able to self-pollinate, or a red delicious apple tree can be planted nearby for cross pollination.

Red Delicious Apples

Red delicious apples are ready for harvest in September. The apple has a shiny, red skin, whitish flesh with a sweet taste. Red delicious apples are not suitable for baking, but are a tasty snack apple. Red delicious trees are prone to pests and must be treated every year. Red delicious trees reach heights of 10 to 25 feet. Red delicious apple trees need cross pollination with another apple variety such as the gala apple tree.

Fuji Apples

Fuji apples have a thick skin that provides for a longer shelf live. The juicy, crispy plump apple has a sweet taste and is suitable for baking, eating and canning. Fuji apples are ready for harvest in October. They are resistant to most diseases and pests. For pollination purposes, plant Fuji apple trees with gala or red delicious apple trees. Fuji trees grow to heights of 8 to 10 feet.

Enterprise Apples

The sweet, firm enterprise apples are ready for harvest in October. The apples are suitable for pies, sauces, juices, cooking and eating. Enterprise apples have a red skin with a yellowish/whitish flesh. They are moderately resistant to most diseases, including fire blight and powdery mildew. Enterprise apple trees should be pollinated with gala apple trees. The trees can reach height of up to 30 feet.
