Hayward makes above ground pool-specific vacuums. The cleaning system uses the existing above ground swimming pool filter. The vacuum system is designed to work with permanently installed above ground pools. The vacuums are notable in that they resemble cartoon-like critters: Aquabug, Diver Dave, Wanda the Whale and Aquacritter are available cleaners. Problems with the critters include slow, or no forward movement; overly fast movement and the critter getting stuck around a ladder or at the wall.
Clean the pool's filter system if the critter fails to move forward. If your pool's pump doesn't have a strainer basket, purchase the Hayward W560 Leaf Canister to collect leaves. It inserts inline between the critter and the pump. Clean the leaf canister, the pool's hair and lint pot and any strainer baskets. Clear any blockages of the cleaner throat. You will have to pull the cleaner out of the pool and look underneath to do this.
Remove the throat if the cleaner's movement is erratic and fast. The throat is at the rear of the opening under the cleaner. Use a screwdriver to pry the throat loose.
Increase the hose length if the cleaner sticks. The included length is 32 feet. Extra lengths are available. Check the bumper freely rotates--it's on the bottom of the cleaner. Spin it and see. Install a ladder bumper if the hose keeps getting snagged in the ladder.
Clean the rear screen if the steering fails. Simply use a brush and work any debris free.
