Enjoying your pool during the hot days of summer can be one of the most enjoyable of warm weather activities. Over time, however, cracks and fissures can form in the concrete of your pool deck, making an unsightly blemish. These cracks can be annoying, but there are ways to fix such bad spots without having to replace a large are of the concrete, saving you money in the long run.
Prepare the crack by using the circular saw to widen the crack. This may seem like a paradox, but a lot of small cracks have to be widened to allow the bonding/patching agents to fully fill and repair it. Attach the chaser blade to the circular saw and work the blade in the crack. The crack should end up being wide enough for the tip of a syringe or caulking gun to be inserted in it, no more than an inch in width.
Clean your work area (the crack) to make sure there is no unwanted dust, dirt, or grit particles left. If the patching agent is applied to such residue it will bond to them instead of the sides of the crack. The crack should be clean and dry when finished.
Use an industrial strength polyurethane or epoxy filler to fill in the cracks until the filler is level with your pool deck. This step may mean mixing the agent with appropriate amounts of water or simply snipping off the tip of the tube and squeezing the material out. Read and follow the directions on the material for maximum result. This is why it is important for the crack to be wide enough to insert the filler.
Allow product to dry. Depending on whether or not your product choice is a quick-setting agent this can take anywhere from six to twenty-four hours or more. Read the label of the filler to make sure you allow appropriate dry time.
Sand or grind away the excess filler material. This step is important so that there is not a ridge of filler sticking up from your pool deck. Use an electric grinder or sander for this step and grind until the surface is smooth.
Apply decorative material and/or paint to the repaired crack's surface to help it blend in with the rest of the pool deck. This may mean replacing the patterned stucco on top of the repaired area or just painting over it in the same color.
