How to Grow Frankincense Seeds

The sap of the Frankincense tree is an aromatic resin used in perfumes, soap, lotion and incense. Frankincense is also a common ingredient in homeopathic alternative remedies for treating inflammation. Growing Frankincense (Boswellia) can be challenging as Frankincense seeds typically have an extremely low germination rate and are choosy in regards to their growing conditions. An arid environment and a soil that is rich in limestone increase the chances of successful seed propagation.

Mix three parts crushed limestone with one part sand in bucket.

Fill container 2/3 full with limestone/sand mixture.

Cover the top of the limestone/sand with one-quarter inch of sand.

Sprinkle Frankincense seeds on top of the sand.

Cover the seeds with one-eighth to one-quarter inch of limestone/sand mixture.

Fill spray bottle with spring water.

Spray the top of the soil with water until saturated but not “ponding”.

Place container in a sunny area free from frost.

Replicate a natural environment of “watering” by the morning dew by spraying the top of the soil every morning.

Allow soil to dry throughout the day; continue daily morning watering with the spray bottle.

Observe the container for seedlings after three or four weeks. Continue to spray seedlings each morning once they emerge.

Continue to water with a morning mist after seedlings grow into plants.

  • Crushed limestone
  • Sand
  • Spray bottle
  • Spring water (purchase from grocery store)

Tips

  • While an established plant can withstand cooler temperatures, propagating seeds requires plenty of warmth and sun.
  • Avoid using tap water that may contain fluoride.
