Florida is known for lush vegetation and lots of humidity, rainfall and sunshine. It is simple to grow a healthy green lawn in Florida, if you understand what type of grass seed you need and the preparation of the soil. There are some key things to keep in mind when planting grass seed in this tropical state.
Decide what type of grass seed you want. This depends if you want a grass to grow in shade, bright sunlight, a showy grass, or a grass that can stand up well to activity. Talk to an expert at your local gardening store who will help you choose the correct grass seed. The most popular types of grass seed to grow in Florida include Bahia and Bermuda grass.
Make sure your soil has a pH between 6 and 7. Prepare the soil with proper materials. For example, if it has high acidity, you will have to add compost. Too low, and you should sprinkle lime over the top of it.
Use a till or rake to go over the soil. Discard of any dead grass, weeds, rocks or dirt clods. Apply a fertilizer and work it into the soil with the till. Keep in mind that if you live near water in Florida, you will only need a small amount of fertilizer.
Use a rake over the ground one more time to even it out. Use a sprinkler on the soil to get it moist.
Seed the lawn using a seed spreader or your hands. If you use your hands, make sure you seed in every direction, starting at different ends and going over the lawn area multiple times. Sprinkle a layer of dirt about 1/3-inch thick over the grass seed after it is planted. Water them thoroughly to keep them wet but not soaked.
Watch for the seeds to germinate, usually within a week and a half for Florida climate. Keep the grass consistently moist until then.
