Nothing beats a homemade peach cobbler featuring peaches fresh from the tree. Growing your own peaches can be challenging but worth the effort. The peach is a deciduous tree with specific temperature requirements that limit where it can be grown successfully. Generally, the peach tree enjoys heat in the summer and cold in the winter; it is hardy in USDA zones 5 to 9. To sow your seed outdoors you must live in an area that has temperatures below 40 degrees for at least 60 consecutive days. You can also start your peach tree indoors, with a method known as cold-moist stratification.
To Start a Peach Tree Seed Indoors
Begin the stratification process in the fall by soaking the seed in water for 24 hours. Do not remove the hard outer pit surrounding the seed.
Moisten a handful of sphagnum peat moss and cover the peach tree seed with it until it is completely surrounded.
Place the moss-covered seed in the plastic bag and close it. Place the bag in the refrigerator and leave it there for at least 12 weeks.

To Start a Peach Tree Seed Outdoors
Plant your seed in the fall in an area of the garden that gets full sun. You can start the seed either in a pot or in the ground. Whichever method you choose, you will need to amend the soil.
Mix equal parts of soil, sand and compost. Plant the peach seed 1.5 inches in depth and cover it with peat moss.
Water the planting site. Continue to water periodically, especially during dryer periods. Your seed should germinate in the spring.
