Yucca plants, also called soap cactus, are large cacti with spiky leaves and white or pale pink flower spikes in the middle of the plant. Yuccas grow quite large over their life cycle. Yucca is the most commonly identified cactus. Gather the seeds and save them to grow more yuccas and/or give them to family and friends.
Gather the seedpods from the ground or snap them from the large stem in the center of the yucca plant. Do not use any that have split or are still green. These will not be viable seeds.
Place the pods in an out-of-the-way location and on a paper towel. It will take several weeks for the seeds to dry completely.
Use the pliers if necessary to crush the pod to gain access to the tiny seeds inside the pod. Inside are rows of seeds that look like flat, black wafers. Inspect any of these rows of seeds to determine if there are holes in the center. Discard any that do have holes. Moths have used these seeds for feeding. As the yucca plant produces thousands of these tiny seeds, you will find as many as you want to store in spite of the bad ones.
Fill a small plastic container with sand and moisten the sand with water. Do not over-water. Dependent on the size of your container, start with a few drops of water and mix into the sand. Keep adding drops of water until the sand is moist.
Drop the seeds on top of the moist sand and lightly press the seeds into the sand. Cover the container with a lid and place in the refrigerator for the winter. Check the soil to determine if it is still moist each week. Do not add water if the soil is still moist.
