According To The Property Brothers, No Backyard Is Complete Without Two Things

Drew and Jonathan Scott, the duo better known as The Property Brothers, have long helped families make houses into homes. So they know quite a bit about what a backyard space needs. And whether they're designing for themselves, their parents, or various clients, there are some things they don't leave any backyard without. Two of the most important features they include in yards are outdoor sitting and eating spaces, and plenty of trees and other plants.

Backyards are some of the most important parts of homes, and as Drew Scott notes in a YouTube video where he gives a tour of his own outdoor space, they are often "the most fun" and are "extra bonus areas you can enjoy with your family". You can't enjoy a sterile, dreary backyard or one with no spots to sit and relax. So it's important to make it a welcoming and inviting space where you want to spend time.

A sitting or dining area with tables and comfortable chairs is a must. In Drew Scott's own yard, he boasts a stunning backyard patio with a dining table and chairs. He also has additional seating in the yard itself, thanks to two swinging egg chairs. Jonathan Scott's house, which he shares with actress Zooey Deschanel, also has plenty of outdoor seating, including tall chairs and a bar counter, so everyone can enjoy food from the grill. The Scotts' parents' yard similarly has a full outdoor dining set, as well as comfortable lounging areas in front of a fireplace. And it's all protected by a pergola with corrugated roofing to shield everyone from the sun and rain.

Trees and other plants are must haves for the Scotts' backyards

Sitting in your backyard is great, but what's the point if you don't have stunning landscaping to look at, enjoy, and better yet, eat? That's why Drew Scott includes dwarf lemon trees in his own yard, and his parents have not just lemons but also mandarin trees. While you may not be able to grow citrus trees outdoors year-round if you live in a colder climate, there are many that can be put in containers so they can grow both indoors and out in a garden, depending on the weather. Jonathan Scott's house is no different. He notes in a YouTube house tour that his yard is so lush, it almost feels like he's "living in a park." In addition to stunning hedges and California sycamores, he was also able to keep the roses that came with the house. He just had to transplant the roses to a different spot in the yard.

The Scotts don't just use lush plants and cozy seating areas when designing homes for themselves and their families, though. These features are also present in the spaces they design for others. In their fun, competitive show Brother Vs Brother, the two see who can flip houses for more money. And both brothers always include stunning outdoor spaces with plenty of seating and landscaping to help give the houses huge boosts in curb appeal.
