When planting a new lawn, hydroseeding can save you time and labor. It is a method of mixing the seed, starter fertilizer and compost, and applying with a hose, similar to watering your lawn. It is much less expensive than laying sod, and provides more even results than sowing the seed by hand.

Measure the square footage of the area you are planting by multiplying the length by the width of the plot. You will need this number to determine how much grass seed, compost and fertilizer to purchase.

Remove any large stones, weeds or other obstacles from the area to be sprayed. Rake the soil smooth, and add any desired soil amendments, such as lime for acidic soils, sand to improve drainage, or compost for enriching the soil fertility.

Choose grass seed based on the climate where you live and desired lawn appearance and maintenance requirements. Professionals at the gardening center can help you with this decision. Purchase starter fertilizer, and mulch or compost. You will also need to rent a hydroseeder tank with hose.

Measure the seed, fertilizer and mulch in the sprayer tank according to specifications for your square footage. Add water to tank fill line. The agitator in the hydroseeding machine will mix ingredients for spraying.

Attach the hose to sprayer, and start the machine. Spray half the mixture in evenly spaced rows going one direction across the plot, then spray the other half in evenly spaced rows going the opposite direction. This will provide even coverage.

Keep the area gently watered and moist until seeds sprout, then slowly decrease watering as recommended by the directions on your grass seed.
