Indoor bamboo plants, also referred to as lucky bamboo or Dracaena sanderiana, are placed in homes for decoration as well as for their meaning and spiritual qualities. For example, three bamboo stalks means happiness and six means harmony. Other meaning are given for other numbers of stalks. The plants are also apart of the Feng Shui concept and are considered to light the future. Bamboo can be made to grow in different directions by using tricks with light, which is believed to to make them more lucky. When purchasing lucky bamboo, make sure you are in fact buying bamboo.
Grow lucky bamboo in a glass vase with rocks holding it in place and water to keep the plant hydrated. Replace the water every day or two to prevent it from developing algae.
Let the water sit for a day in a container before using it if you have heavily chlorinated water, so the chlorine will evaporate out somewhat.
Put your bamboo in a location with indirect lighting, not directly in the sun. This is a plant that typically grows under shelter of tall trees and does not do well in the blazing heat of direct light. It will also do poorly in low light, causing a less than rich green and possible yellowing of leaves.
Mix plant food at about 1/10th the normal dilution. If the directions say to mix 1 tbsp. of food with a certain amount of water, you would use 1/10th tsp. of plant food with the same amount of water. Pour in a little of the plant food mix every time you add new water.
Plant the bamboo in a pot with rich top soil if you are not able to tend to it daily. They are plants after all and will grow in soil. The soil will provide more nutrients for the bamboo, but you should still give it plant food, at the same measurements, once a month. Keep soil damp but not soggy.
