How to Adjust the Brakes on a Murray Lawn Tractor
Over time, the brake on your Murray lawn tractor will begin to loosen on the rear axle of the lawn tractor, and you will have to push the brake pedal in sooner to stop in time. For safety purposes, the lawn tractor should be able to stop from full speed in 5 feet, recommends the Murray Lawn Tractor Operator's Manual. You will have to tighten the brake clamp on the rear axle of the Murray lawn tractor with a few tools to make the brake more responsive.
Park your Murray lawn tractor on a level spot. Press the brake pedal all the way in, and engage the parking brake.
Lay under the rear axle of the Murray lawn tractor. There will be a clamp device with a bolt (brake rod) and spring (operating arm) on the left side of the axle.
Measure the distance from the clamp operating arm on the axle to the jam nut on the end of the brake rod extending out of the back of the axle. It should be 1 9/16 inches.
Tighten or loosen the jam nut (with the proper-sized wrench) to this measurement so that the brake clamp will stop the Murray lawn tractor better.
