How to Grow Blue Fescue From Seed

By Larry Parr ; Updated September 21, 2017

Blue fescue is an ornamental blue-colored grass that grows in clumps, approximately 1 foot high and about 1 foot in diameter. It make a nice border between a lawn and a flower garden, or it can be used to add accent splashes to almost any landscape. The leaves of the blue fescue are very fine, almost hair-like, and add a light, colorful touch to almost any yard or garden. Blue fescue prefers a sunny location and well-drained soil. No expertise is required to plant or to grow blue fescue.

Choose a sunny location with well-drained soil. Blue fescue will not grow where water stands.

Loosen the soil with a shovel or a hoe. Break up dirt clods and remove any rocks or other debris.

Mix soil-less potting mix with your garden soil until the mix is about 50/50.

Wait until all possibility of frost has passed before planting seeds in early spring. Press blue fescue seeds approximately 1/4 inch into the soil, spaced approximately 2 inches apart.

Dust the area with organic manure, placing approximately a 1/4-inch layer evenly over the seeds.

Water gently with a sprinkler to dampen the soil but do not make it soggy. Sprinkle gently to avoid washing the seeds away. Keep the ground moist but not soggy. Seeds should sprout within seven to 10 days.

Bunch the leaves together and cut off 1/2 inch with scissors when the grass is 4 inches tall. This will improve the looks of the grass as well as encourage new root growth.
