Avid gardeners often spend their time either cultivating their gardens or planning their gardens. Because a fair amount of gardening involves planning, it can save time and effort to make a map of a garden. A map of a garden is exactly what the name suggests: it is a drawing of a garden showing everything you have planted or everything you plan to plant. Include all of your garden plants, scaling them accurately within your gardening space, to help you keep track of your plants.
Create an outer perimeter of your gardening area. Make each grid of the graph paper equal to a specific length in your garden (6-inch squares or 1-foot squares). Draw the outside dimensions of your growing area on the graph paper.
Begin adding the plants you already have planted in your garden, using the same scale you created when you drew your garden perimeter. Label each plant as you add it to your map. Use colored pencils to add color to your map.
Add the rows between each plant, using the same scale.
Look to find any unoccupied spaces within your garden map. These are places where you can plan new additions to your garden.
Keep your garden map current by adding plants to your map as you plant them in your garden.
Add a space for notes and plans. Jot down the names of specific plants you want to add to your garden and the places you want to place these plants. If you have thoughts about reorganizing or moving plants, write these plans down on your map also.
Make several photocopies of your map so you can keep notes current. When you accomplish plans or notes, you can cross the notes out and start working on a fresh map, incorporating the changes into your fresh map.
Things You Will Need
- Graph paper
- Colored pencils
- Graphics program (optional)
- Consider using a graphics program to make a garden map on the computer. Make an outline of your growing area in the graphics program and add your plants and rows to the growing area by making smaller squares and rectangles of different colors. As you add new plants or change your garden, updating the garden map will be an easy task using the graphics program.
