Information on MTD Riding Lawn Mowers

By Lisa Larsen
MTD makes several types of riding lawn mowers.

MTD riding lawn mowers are a smart choice for homeowners who have large areas to mow, such as an acre or more. The mowers are equipped with light duty, easily serviced engines (Briggs & Stratton and Kohler), giving the user years of performance at an affordable price. In recent years, MTD has purchased four other outdoor equipment companies, expanding its product base to include garden tractors capable of converting to snow blowers. Most models of MTD mowers can be purchased at big box stores.

MTD sells its mowers through its four subsidiary companies: Yard-Man, White Outdoor, Yard Machines and Bolens. Designed for residential use, MTD riding lawn mowers, also called lawn tractors, range in power from 12.5 horsepower to 26 hp. Deck sizes range from 32 inches to 54 inches. Prices range from $850 to $3,500.

The Yard-Man riding mowers are available in 12.5 hp with a 38-inch deck, 15.5 hp with a 42-inch deck, and 22 hp with a 46-inch deck. The two smaller mowers have a Briggs & Stratton engine. The largest mower has a Kohler engine. All three mowers have an 18-inch turning radius and a two-year warranty. Yard-Man also makes two ZTR (zero turn radius) riding mowers, one with a 42-inch deck and the other with a 50-inch deck. All mowers have several cutting heights, and some have bagging capabilities.

White Outdoor

Some White lawn tractors convert to snow blowers in the winter.

White makes two ZTR riding mowers: a 50-inch deck with a 23 hp Briggs & Stratton engine, and a 54-inch deck with a 26 hp Briggs & Stratton engine. White also makes two lawn tractors, with seven models to choose from, each with snow-blowing capabilities.

Yard Machines

There are four riding mowers available through Yard Machines. Three of the mowers have 38-inch decks and six-speed transmissions. Two of those three are equipped with a 13.5 hp Tecumseh engine; the other has a 15.5 hp Briggs and Stratton engine. The largest of the mowers has a 42-inch deck, and a 17.5 hp Briggs & Stratton engine with a seven-speed transmission.

The only riding mower Bolens offers is a 13.5 hp mower with a 38-inch deck. It has a six-speed transmission and an 18-inch turning radius. Bolens offers its equipment exclusively through Lowe’s stores.

MTD mowers are available in the following big box stores: Lowe’s, Home Depot and Sears. In addition, many online outlets sell MTD products.
