Hi! This is Yolanda Vanveen on behalf of Expert Village. In this series, we're talking about bamboo. What are the characteristics of bamboo? What makes bamboo, bamboo? Well, bamboo has been around for thousands of years and it's always associated with Asian gardens. It's very popular in America right now because it's just a beautiful plant in itself and it's easy to grow. You really can't do wrong with it. Bamboo is the fastest growing plant in the world. It's a grass and it can grow feet in one day. You almost have to be careful with it the fact, you only want to place it where it's not going to become invasive. The clumping bamboos are okay because they're smaller or taller, but they stay in a clump and they don't send runners everywhere, whereas the running varieties will send runners. The most important place to plant your bamboo is in a sunny place because it is a grass and it needs sun, and it needs good drainage. Bamboo is one of the strongest fibers in the world. It's really hard to break. In the next segment, we're going to talk about what bamboo has meant to mankind.
