Hi friends, I'm Mark Govan with ABC Pest Control in Largo, Florida, and people have asked me, well what are ticks. Well ticks aren't really an insect, in fact, remember all insects have six legs, ticks have legs, ticks have eight, which mean they're an irruptive family or they're like a spider. So like spiders, ticks have eight legs. Now where do ticks live? Well ticks live outside, generally in the foliage areas. What they do is, ticks want to attach themselves to a host where they can draw a blood meal, and they need that blood meal to go ahead and reproduce. So ticks are very nasty in the fact that they carry a lot of diseases such as tularemia, Rocky Mountain spotted fever and encephalitis. Now these diseases can be spread when the actual tick feeds on you. Once they have fed on you, they will engorge themselves with blood, drop off, and then they can lay a lot of eggs. And these eggs will actually hatch, and then they crawl up a plant or the side of a building and they get ready to fall off onto another unsuspecting person or a pet. So if you want to go ahead and make sure that you're not affected by ticks, use protected clothing, long sleeve shirts and pants, and maybe a combination of DEET and other products such as Skin-So-Soft, and that may help keep ticks off you. I'm Mark Govan with ABC Pest Control in Largo, Florida, hoping you have a pest-free day.
