Hi friends, I'm Mark Govan with ABC Pest Control in Largo, Florida and you know people want to know what color are sand fleas? Well when people say fleas sometimes they may confuse fleas with actual sand fleas. Well sand fleas are actually a crustacean and with this crustacean it is a sandy colored crustacean. It is a anywhere from a quarter inch to I have seen them up to one inch in size. Now where do they live? They live basically at the water's edge and because they are sandy colored like that they are very hard to see and if you want to find them you can, as the water kind of recedes back you want to dig down and you pull up some sand and a lot of times you see the little bubbles at the water's edge and if you pull that up you will see them and they will scurry real quickly down underneath the sand and that's where they hide. Do they affect people? No mostly birds and things try to feed on them right there at the water's edge but they burrow down in the sand so you are normally not bothered with sand fleas or sand crabs as some other people will call them. Now what do they do or what are they good for? Well they actually feed on plankton and they have got a couple of little apparatus at the end of them that they filter the plankton out and that is how they feed so not a pest for you or me to worry about and a great food source for if you like fish for a group or something people use them for that and sometimes people actually you will see when the birds are eating them it gives them good food as well so nothing for us to worry about. The color is sandy always remember that. My name is Mark Govan with ABC Pest Control in Largo, Florida hoping you have a pest free day.
