Hi, this is Yolanda Vanveen and in this section we're going to talk about how to grow echinacea. Now echinacea is a beautiful garden plant, and it's related to Black-eyed Susan. And it's botanical name is actually rudbeckia puerperia. So it's basically a purple Black-eyed Susan. And it grows just the same as a Black-eyed Susan does, it's really easy to grow. And you just start it from a root. If you're transplanting it, the best time to transplant it is in the fall when it's done blooming. So as soon as the foliage dies back and it starts turning brown, chop all the foliage off. And then just take a shovel and dig right around it, and dig it right up. And make sure and take as many stems as you can. And even if you cut some of the roots off that's fine. It'll still grow back. And they're easy to separate too, they just pull right apart, there is just little pieces of them. And you can turn around and break it apart or you can leave it solid, it doesn't matter, it'll grow either way. They do need full hot sun and good drainage and lots of water - in between watering, you let them dry out too. Echinacea has been around for a long time. It's only been recently that Americans have realized what health benefits that it provides. It boosts your immune system and makes you much stronger, and if you're coming down with a cold, just a little echinacea will make you stronger right away. And the strength is in the leaves, just like chrysanthemum leaf, you can chop it up and dry it or you can eat it fresh. But it'll grow and be beautiful every year and you can enjoy echinacea for many years 'cause it's a very hardy plant.
