Hi friends I'm Mark Govan with ABC Pest Control in Largo, Florida. We've been asked how do you catch a squirrel, especially maybe even a squirrel that's nesting up in an attic. Well squirrels tend to be foragers and they'll forage anywhere within your home either for food or for if they want to make a nest or something up in the attic. Once they get up there they can do a lot of damage in the attic. But if you want to catch one and get rid of them, couple things that you can go ahead and do. Number one you could use a live trap, maybe baited with some seeds or nuts or things that the squirrel will be interested in feeding on. Once the squirrel finds the live trap, he'll crawl inside the trap and once you have caught the squirrel, he can't get back out. Once he's crawled into the trap he's locked in and he can't get back out. So then you can remove the squirrel. Now some states if you're having a professional service company do this for you, some states require that the squirrel or animal be put down after it's caught in a live trap. But if, you'd have to check with your local department of agriculture to find out what the actual restrictions are in your state. Once you have identified that the squirrels are living in the attic, there's a couple of things that you can do to eliminate them from being in there. And that's through the use of exclusionary materials such as hardware cloth that you can pickup at any local garden center and you can actually cut this out in a pattern and put it around the areas where the squirrel is gaining entrance. This will stop the squirrels from getting into the home and if you think that there might still be squirrels in the home, there are one way doors that hardware stores sell where the squirrel can get out but then they can't get back in. So the exclusionary material will help keep them out, the one way doors will allow them a fair escape if you want them to get out of the house, that way you don't have to worry about any squirrels being left inside the home. I'm Mark Govan with ABC Pest Control in Largo, Florida and I hope you have a pest free day.
