Tips for Transplanting a Rose Bush

Hi this is Yolanda Vanveen from vanveenbulbs.com. I'm going to give you a few tips on transplanting roses. Roses are very easy to transplant. You can pretty much move them any time of the year. I have a few rules that I try to follow. I try not to move them when they are in the middle of blooming because sometimes when they are in the middle of blooming and you transplant them it will shock them and you'll lose the blooms but saying that they'll grow new blooms so if you are just moving to a new house or you have transplanted them from the neighbor's yard do it any time of the year that you can because they will eventually get on schedule again. Another trick is to always make sure and leave a little more room around them so when you are digging your hole make sure that they have a lot of loose soil to grab on to. I try not to transplant my roses on a 100 degree day. Today is a high of 80 which actually feels cool because we have had a lot of warmer days than this recently and it is getting into late Summer so it is going to rain a little more often in the Fall so really when transplanting them you want to be careful not to water them all the time. The best time to transplant them is in early Spring or in the Fall or middle of Winter. Sometimes in the middle of Summer if you transplant them and you don't water them enough you'll lose them but you can pretty much move them any time of the year. We can move year round so can our roses. Another tip is don't plant them in too much shade. A lot of the roses if they are in too much shade they will never bloom or they'll get really lanky so give them as much sun as you can and try to pick varieties that are more drought resistant or varieties that don't get black spot. You can ask the person at your local garden center or do a little bit of research on line because buying the varieties that do well will save you a lot of trouble in the end.
