How to Grow Wild Strawberry (Fragaria Chiloensis)

Hi, this is Yolanda Vandeen and in this segment I'm going to talk about how to grow wild strawberries or fragaria chiloenis. It's related to the regular strawberries that you have in the garden to eat as the fruit, but they're different and not usually used as an edible fruit. So the name Fragaria Chiloensis, gives you the hint that the plant is native to the pacific regions and to Chile. But it's also found all the way up the pacific side of South and North America, through Central America, through Mexico, up in California all the way up into the Northwest. It grows naturally on the sandy beaches. So they call this sand strawberries as well. So wild strawberries love sun to part shade, if you live inland aways in part shade, if you're near the coastlines or colder climates give them full hot sun and you start them just like a strawberry, a garden strawberry. It's just a little roots, a little starts and as long as you've got some of that root covered and even it will throw off big arms and as long as you cover those, they will start new starts. Again the fruit is not really used to be edible for humans, I guess it's kind of tart, but birds love it. So it's a great plant to have in your garden for birds and to attract wild life. It will keep multiplying and make a nice ground cover. Because it does grow naturally in sand it likes porous, good composted soil with good drainage. So make sure you have a lot of sand or a lot of good organic material in your soil so that it never sits right in water and you will find it will be a great addition to your garden.
