Hi, I'm Stan DeFreitas, Mr. Green Thumb. The bougainvillea is one of the plants that's a real toughie, roughy, tough plant. It'll take full sun, it'll take a hot summer, and it flowers about ten months a year. Remember, the bougainvillea of course we think of hot areas of like Mexico, where it really wants that blaring hot sun. Remember, the leaves that you see the flower is pretty insignificant. You say insignificant, well yes. What we're really admiring is a modified leaf, called a bragh, much like you would on a poinsettia. So the bougainvillea is one of those plants that has those pretty long lasting braghs that can actually last for ten, twelve months a year. They don't like much on cold so if have a cold area you may have to protect it and bring it in or put a cover over it if you are getting down below freezing. But the bougainvillea is an outstanding plant in much of the southern part of the U.S. It's one of those plants to be used on, well containers, you can use it on fences to cover over, or you can actually make some type of a structure like this one is growing on, so it has something to grow on. Make sure it gets a good amount of fertilizer and a good deal of water. The bougainvillea is a good choice for you. I'm Stan Defreitas, Mr. Green Thumb on gardening.
