Hi, this is Yolanda Vanveen, and in this segment, we're going to learn about how to grow stock, which is a beautiful cut flower from Southern Europe. Now, stock, also known as matthiola incana, comes in many different colors in its many different uses. It's a gorgeous plant. But the incana variety is native to Western and Southern Europe. So it can handle climates down from zones eight to eleven, so mostly just from France all the way down to Italy. And so it likes the...lots of ocean climate. It likes wet, wet summers, and a lot of fog, and so it grows really well in the Pacific Northwest. Now, stock is actually a member of the cabbage family, believe it or not. And you can start it as an annual. Just start the seeds in the spring. They'll bloom all summer, and then they'll die back in the fall. They have an incredible fragrance. I love the fragrance of stock. And as a cut flower, they'll last two, three, four weeks. They're one of my favorite garden flowers, and they're very hearty, as we said, down to zone eight or nine. So sometimes even in colder climates, if you mulch them real well, they'll survive the winter. And if you live in a warmer climate, you can start them by the root. Just separate them by the rootstock, and you can make new plants. And you do it in the summer, winter, or fall -- it doesn't matter. But they bloom every summer, and they're just an ideal choice for your garden.
