Hi this is Yolanda Vanveen and in this segment we are going to learn all about how to grow Delphinium. Now Delphiniums are one of my favorite summer blooming plants. They're just so beautiful and the dark blues and the bright whites and they are just such a gorgeous addition to your garden. And they are so easy to grow because they are found all over the northern hemisphere. So when I'm growing my plants I always like to consider where they are native. And Delphinium are pretty much found all over the northern part of the earth. So basically Africa, Asia, North America, there's all types of varieties that are native. And they can handle cold temperatures all the way down to zone four to zone nine. So they don't like warm, warm climates, they don't do so well in hot climates. So you can buy the starts for Delphiniums any time. You can buy them in bloom or this is the fall, they've been cut back. Now they are actually starting some new growth for next year. And so the fall is a great time to start them by root or by division. And as long as you've got a root and part of the stem, then you'll have a new plant. You can also start them by seed in the spring. That's a really easy way to start them. So Delphiniums sometimes have to be staked to get really tall. But as long as they've got a lot of sun and you put enough compost on top of them they should get the strong stem. And they shouldn't need a lot of fertilizer. They just love to have a lot of compost and a lot of water in the summer when they are blooming. Because they are a gorgeous plant in your garden and a great cut flower as well.
