Hi. This is Yolanda Vanveen on behalf of Expert Village. In this series we are learning all about house plants, and in this segment, we are going to talk about the common mistakes that people make with their house plants. The number one mistake that people make with their house plants is over-watering them and letting them sit in water. You have to remember that in nature, it rains, plants dry out and then it rains again. So, the plants actually need a time when they are drying out. So, if they are sitting in water all the time, they will eventually rot and you will lose them. A lot of plants come in plastic sleeves. They are beautiful and ornamental and it really adds a lot to the plant when you are buying it at the store. But, when you are watering your plants, a lot of people tend to over-water and let them sit in water and there's no way for the water to drain. So, it's much better to actually take your plant out of the sleeve or put it in another container or pot holder with some gravel on the bottom of it or just put it on a plate so that when you water it, the water doesn't run off and you can tell right away if it's getting water. So, the trick is to soak it, but to actually let it dry out in between watering. A lot of people never water their house plants and they lose them because they never water them. So, that's another mistake that people make, or they put them somewhere where there's absolutely no light at all and there's not even any artificial light. In the next segment, we'll talk about soil and how to use soil with your house plants.
