Hi, this is Yolanda Vanveen on behalf of Expert Village. In this series we're talking about how to make your garden feel more welcoming. The backyard of your home is generally your play area so when I'm designing my gardens in my back area, I always leave room for play. So leave an area of lawn, leave an area with a swing set, leave an area with a little volleyball net and that way your gardens can be around your play areas. It encourages to go out in the backyard too, so if you have a compost in the corner it may not be that beautiful but you can put a nice hedge around it that is beautiful. You can put a sitting area under a tree, you can make raised beds and have some garden art in them. Your backyard is your play area. You can put a barbecue pit with planters all the way around it so that when you are entertaining there are so many focal points that people can enjoy. The smells and the fragrances of fruit trees in your backyard are always a must cause it's great to have a nice apple in the afternoon sun or pick some strawberrys to have with your strawberry short cake. So when designing your backyard, make it usable, don't just make a display garden where it's just plain and simple and no area to really enjoy it. Welcome your guest out to your garden so that they have a place to sit, give them a place to play and they will enjoy your garden for many years. Come back for more, watch our next segment as we conclude our discussion on how to make your garden feel more welcoming.
