Using commercial drain cleaners can be very dangerous. I'm Lauren Roy at Sugar Hollow Farm in Phillipston, Mass. When you have a drain that's not draining very quickly, it could be caused by hair, or food, or something that's clogging the drain. We've all seen the commercial drain cleaners, but they're made with lye and caustic chemicals that sometimes can back up and spray into your face, and can be very, very dangerous. But I'm going to show you something that you can do with things that you probably have in your house that will clean your drains, especially if you use them on a regular basis. Just take some baking soda and put it in your drain and take some cider vinegar and put that in your drain. And you can see that the chemical reaction between the two of them causes that bubbling action. But that action will break down bacon fat and break down hair. And you can follow that up with some boiling water. Pour down the drain for a good two minutes. If you do that on a regular basis, you can keep your drains not only free from clogs, but smelling sweeter too, because they won't have all that hair and food that are down there causing the smells and the fruit flies.
