Hi, this is Yolanda Vanveen and in this segment we're going to learn all about, "How to grow Soybeans"? Now Soybeans are used for many different types of food. So whether you turn them into tofu or make soy milk out of it, it's one of the most nutritious foods in the world. And they're just a bean, just like any other green bean and they're very easy to grow. And the most important thing to do when you do grow them is to start them by seed. But make sure and to start them when it's warm outside. They do not like any cold weather and they'll freeze out very easily. They don't want to go below forty degrees at all. So it's best to start them actually when it's almost sixty to seventy degrees outside. And if you live in a cold climate, you can always start them indoors and then put them outdoors later. If you live in a mild climate, just wait to start them when it's warm enough; at least sixty to seventy degrees consistently for a week. And you just start the seeds about one or two inches deep and they'll start growing immediately and they make a vine. So give them something to grab to grab on to, whether it's a trellis or a tomato cage or a little tepee or a fence, pretty much anything that they can grow onto. And water them well but let them drown in between. Give them good compost or potting soil, something really organic so that they get lots of nutrients. And as soon as they start developing the soybeans, pinch the beans off; as soon as they're set and they've made the beans just like you would on the green beans. And keep picking them off because if you let them go into the beans and you don't pick them up they'll; pick them off, they'll stop growing right away. Whereas if you keep picking them off as they grow, they'll continue to make soybeans through the fall. And in the fall when it starts to freeze at night, they'll start dying back and turning brown and then just cut them back and either compost the greens or leave them as mulch and then they'll provide energy for the next year. And then just start them by seed again in the spring. But they're very easy to grow and they're very rewarding in the garden.
