I'm Bill Elzey with Showplace Lawns. Let's talk a little bit about sterilizing the soil. We want to sterilize the soil to mainly make it weed free and get rid of all the unwanted vegetation. To do that we're going to use black plastic, some nice sturdy rocks to hold it down, we're going to leave it for about ten days to about two weeks or longer depending on the time of year in which you do it. Put this plastic out. Put it down where it's real tight. That's keeping the air away from it. It's keeping the light out of it. And with the heat of the sun, it's going to heat this up and that's where your sterilization will come from. Again, depending on the time of year you're doing it, you may need to let it sit longer. If it's in the summer when that sun's nice and hot, ten days will work just fine for you. And that's how you sterilize the lawn.
