How to Design a Salad Garden

Hi this is Yolanda Vanveen and in this segment we are going to talk about how to design a salad garden. So it's so wonderful to have your own vegetable garden but if you are a person like me I love salads. I love all types of lettuces and spinach and carrots and everything that goes along with salad and onions and tomatoes, little baby tomatoes are just great in salads. So it's really easy to grow those in a salad garden. So I always say to grow the vegetables that you enjoy and if you enjoy salads then grow salad. Now you don't need a large area to grow a salad garden. You can have just a very small small area and you can use just raised cement blocks or you can use wood or you can even grow them in containers but the trick is to start everything in the Spring and so you can start your lettuce for your salad in the Spring and just plant them just a couple inches deep and this is great. You can just use little rows. So the easiest way to actually start your seeds is to make little raised areas and a little trough and then just sprinkle your seeds into the trough and then just cover them up barely and then water it with a misting type of hose. You never want to just spray it hard but if you get the little extensions on your hose or where you can turn it like a shower head and it turns to a mist that's perfect and just mist all of your vegetables throughout the Summer and don't forget with your salads you can always use edible flowers. Pansies make great edible flowers and herbs too and a little bit of thyme or oregano in your salad will always be nice as well and so always remember when you are growing a salad garden you can use a combination of all different plants and less is more because you don't need to overwhelm your garden either and only grow as much as you can use or as much as you want to give away to the neighbors. That way you can grow your own salad for dinner knowing that it came out of your own garden.
