Ok, we're going to start building this pile. And first thing we want to do is we want to aerate the soil underneath where the pile is going to be so that it drains real well in rainy times. So we're going to take this nice, hard tong pitchfork, and we're going to punch some holes in the ground to create some nice airiness. We want to keep those holes nice and wide so that the soil, when it rains, it drains on down. It doesn't puddle up and make your compost too soggy. Then we're going to take these sticks, and we're going to put it on top of where that aeration is. This also creates lots of aeration so that the pile can breathe, so it's up off the ground a little bit. Then we're going to put this woody material, also creates quite a bit of aeration, on top. So we're going to put this woody material next so that the pile really breathes really well. There we got the aeration.
