I'm Bill Elzey with Showplace Lawns. How to make compost. Well there is a variety of ways but one of the best ways I have found is to take the yard clippings, the leaves and all the different parts of yard trash, put them in a pile, make sure that it can get some air, and let them sit. In this particular case what I also have done and it works is I have thrown some organic fertilizer in in some layers, we have thrown some dry molasses in in layers and then we turn it a little bit occasionally. After a year it turns to a good compost. We have used this. This is this Spring's leaves and grass. It will be ready for next Spring. We don't really put a lot of fuss into it. We just put it back here and leave it. Like I said there are lots of different ways of doing that. Compost should account for about 25% of your soil in your bed areas and even in your lawn but this makes a really great compost with the leaves, the grass clippings, old plants and just let it sit. Throw a little water on it occasionally and you have got a good compost. Now also as I have said there are other ways you can get more involved with it but our simple method of dumping it in here, having it to where it gets some air and throwing some water on it works really well.
