At the time of planting you should really add some fertilizer in to the soil to give your plants a little something to feed on. Annual plants because they flower so much tend to need a lot of nutrients so you have a couple of options. You can certainly turn some compost into the soil at the time of turning it or you can use a slow release fertilizer so I have already measured this out for the area that we will be planting and I'm just going to sprinkle it over the top of the ground and then I'm going to use a rake to rake that fertilizer in. This way our fertilizer gets incorporated into the top inch of soil instead of just running off into the side walk.
