Black-Eyed
Susans are noted for their large, daisy-type blooms with prominent
dark centers. Flowers come in shades of yellow, orange and mahogany
and bloom in summer and autumn. In cooler zones they may only
bloom in autumn. Plants grow 30 to 36 inches tall and are suitable
for massed planting or floral borders. They are delightful long-lasting
cut flowers.
Plants will thrive in most climates except tropics. They need full sun all day and wind protection unless they are closely planted. Well-drained soil is a must. Black-Eyed Susans do well in most soils, but seem to prefer a soil with some organic matter.
Sow seeds directly in the garden once all danger of frost has passed. They can also be started indoors. Thin seedlings to about 12 inches apart. Pinch out the tips when 6-8 inches tall to encourage fuller, sturdier plants. Once established, heavy weekly watering should be sufficient. Monthly applications of complete plant food results in larger plants and flowers. They will sometimes self-seed if flowers are left to age and die naturally on the plant.
