(Brassicas oleracea var. capitata)

If heads begin to crack, the inside of the head is growing faster than the outside. This is sometimes caused by over-fertilization. If allowed to continue to crack, the cabbage will go to seed. To stop the process, give the whole plant a 1/2 turn to break off some of the roots. It this does not stop the cracking, give it another 1/4 turn in a few days.

  • Climate
Cabbage is adaptable to a wide range of climates. It is frost tolerant but not tolerant to extreme heat which causes the head to split.
  • Location
Plant in a well drained, sunny location. Soil should be enriched with compost or composted manure.
  • Cultivation
Cabbage grows rapidly, so keep the soil well watered and provide the plants with plenty of nitrogen. Biweekly supplements of nitrogen may be necessary if the soil is sandy and leaches easily.
  • Planting
Sow seeds 1/4 inch deep and 3 inches apart in seed trays or flats. Transplants can be placed in the garden in the spring in cool zones and rear round in other areas. Transplant seedlings when 4 inches tall with 4-5 true leaves. Plant seedlings about a foot apart. Harden off before transplanting by withholding water for a couple of days.
  • Watering
    Keep the topsoil moist.
  • Fertiziling
Work in plenty of manure. Poultry manure is especially good. Additional nitrogen may be necessary as the head begins to mature.
  • Pests & Disease
    See Brassicas.
  • Harvesting
Plants mature in 14-16 weeks. Harvest when the head is firm, removing from the stem by cutting and leaving the outer leaves on the stem.
