Ravine State Gardens

Palatka, Florida
United States

You can either drive or walk through these 153. 6 acres of sub- tropical gardens and a 1.8-mile drive. Beautifully set in a natural ravine with a surrounding landscape of blooming shrubs and flowers, these gardens are partly formal, partly natural. Natural species are favored. Azaleas are the featured attraction from January to April, with more than 100,000 of them (fifty varieties) abloom then. Formed by water flowing through the sandy west shore of the St. Johns River, the ravine became covered with indigenous shrubs, pines, magnolias, dogwoods, and many other species of trees. In the 1930s the park was established, and plantings of azaleas and camellias were added to complement the flowering dogwoods and other springtime shrubs. There are also a water-lily reflection pond and terrific hikes. Tours are offered during azalea season.
