Harvested Asparagus (Includes general care tips) in Veggies & Herbs 2010

Description:

Zone:
5
Months:
Apr-May
Task:
Harvesting
Category:
Vegetables

This is the third year our asparagus has come up and I was able to harvest about 10 spears. I am hoping that next year we will get twice as much. Reminder: Patience is a virtue.

Photos:

  1. Mar 20 to Apr 10

Step 1 When preparing the rest of the garden soil in the early spring, do not til near the bed for fear of disturbing the root system.

  2. Apr 25 to May 22

Step 2 Asparagus can be harvested until the spears are smaller than 3/8" in diameter. I harvested about 15 spears over a 4 week period.

  3. May 22 to Oct 23

Step 3 Let the spears grow tall and fern like. This will allow the root system to replenish itself for next year. Keep the bed as weed and grass free as possible.

  4. Nov 1 to Nov 6

Step 4 Clean up the brown stalks after the first hard freeze. Top compost with well rotted manure.
