Gophers are a type of rodent identified by their brown fur and large heads. Gophers also have long claws and sharp teeth for digging tunnels in the ground. Gophers can dig holes as deep as 6 feet which can cause problems for homeowners. Gophers also cause problems when they destroy the roots in a homeowner's garden. If you find the animals are destroying your property, you will need to get rid of the pests.
Locate the areas of your yard that have been disturbed by gophers. Measure out this area to determine how much bait to use.
Put on a pair of gloves before handling the zinc phosphide bait. You might also want to wear a mask. This poison can be absorbed in to the skin, or breathed in to the lungs. Zinc phosphide is an excellent bait to use because it will kill a gopher with one feeding.
Spread the bait around the yard at a rate of 4 to 10 pounds per acre of land. You can sprinkle it with your hands or use a cyclone seeder. Do this in the fall before any snow is expected.
