If you have a small yard and wish for a garden, you may wonder where you will put it. A simple solution to this problem is to build up instead of out. To do this, build a trellis. This will allow you to grow a variety of plants, vegetables and herbs. One possibility is to create an arch frame. Using this type of design, you can have a small garden with another garden overhead if you plan it properly.
Locate a spot that gets a good amount of sunlight. Select an area measuring 10 by 6 feet to ensure the trellis will fit.
Set two stakes 4 feet apart in the area where you want the trellis. Hammer the ends of the stakes into the ground halfway. These are your supports for the fence sections.
Set one end of a fence panel and set it on the ground against the two stakes. Push the prongs of the fence section into the ground with your foot. Lift the opposite end of the fence panel up until the entire panel is standing almost vertical.
Push against the panel so that it presses against the stakes hard. Have another person pull down the free end of the fence panel until the end touches the ground. This will create an arch 6 feet wide and 6 feet high. Have the other person use their foot to push down the second set of prongs into the ground as you did for the first end.
Set a stake at each end of the fence section opposite the stakes from Step 1. Set the stakes on the outside face of the fence section. Hammer the ends of the stakes into the ground halfway to secure them and the fencing.
Repeat the entire process using the second fence panel and the remaining four stakes. Have the fence panels touch at the ends. Tie the panels together with zip ties. When finished, you should have a trellis 9 feet long by 6 feet tall by 6 feet wide.
