Many homeowners enjoy having a garden. Having a thriving garden means keeping out animals, children or other unwanted visitors. To solve this problem, build a garden fence and create a landscaping feature. Fence parts are available pre-sized according to your needs.
Place a stake at one corner of your garden. Use the measuring tape to measure 8 feet. Place a stake at that point. Repeat the process until you have completed one side of the garden fence. Use the last stake as a corner and start measuring at a right angle to the side you just completed. Continue this process until all four sides are completed.
Set one stake between two others where you want the garden fence gate. Lay out one 4-by-4-inch post in front of each stake. This will ensure you have enough posts for the fence.
Dig a hole behind each stake along the inside edge of the fence line with the post hole digger. Dig the hole from 18 to 24 inches deep depending on how high you are building the garden fence. Set a layer of gravel in the bottom of the hole; this ensures the end of the post will not rot from moisture or boring insects. Set a post into one of the holes. Set the level on top of the post to make sure the post is leveled off. Have one person hold the post while another person pours concrete into the hole. Tamp down and smooth out the concrete. Allow the concrete to dry.
Calculate the correct height of the posts in relation to your fence panels. Take a measurement from the base of the post up to the proper height, using the height of the fence panels as a guide. Mark a line across one side of the post. This is where the top of the fence panel will be attached to the post. Make sure the marking lines are all on the same side of the posts for easy reference.
Drill starter holes into the posts for the fence panels. Have someone hold the panel in position while you attach the panels to the posts by drilling the screws into the holes. Cut the corner panels to fit as each may be different lengths.
Measure the gate opening. Cut the gate panel 1 inch shorter than the gate opening. Lay the gate panel flat on the ground. Place the 2-by-4 into position from one top corner to the opposite bottom corner, forming a Z pattern on one side of the gate. Drill screws through the 2-by-4 into the gate.
Install the hinges on the gate post. Set up the gate and attach it to the hinges with the drill and small screws. Install the latch to the gate and the post opposite the hinges.
