How to Prepare Fava Beans for Cooking

Overview

Fava beans are both yummy and healthy. Available for only a short time in the spring, fava beans can be prepared a number of ways. One simple dish includes a saute with pancetta, garlic and onions. But to get the beans to the point of inclusion in a recipe will require a little work on your part; the beans must be both shelled and skinned.

Step 1

Place a large pot of water on the stove to boil.

Step 2

Snap off the end of the pod and pull down the string. Remove the beans from the pod. The outside covering on the beans is inedible and will need to be removed.

Step 3

Place the beans into the boiling water and blanch them for 60 seconds.

Step 4

Pour the beans into a strainer, and run cold water over them until they are cooled.

Step 5

Lightly pinch the tip of each bean, and the inside bean should pop out the other end. The fava bean is now ready to be included in your recipe.
