Snakes, such as garter snakes, are often found slithering in gardens. Garter snakes are non-poisonous and they can be helpful in eliminating bugs, mice and other pests from entering your garden. However, if the snakes multiply or attract other unwanted predators then they can become a nuisance to your garden and property. Removing the snakes can be done naturally by removing their food source or by having a predator, such as dog, keep them away. If there are more dangerous types of snakes near your garden you may need to take more extreme measures in ridding yourself of them.
Mow your lawn when the grass is tall and then try to locate where the snakes may be nesting. You may find small holes near the outside of your garden or near electrical poles. Also, find any areas where there might be mice, as they may be attracting the snakes to the area near your garden.
Use an outdoor pet, such as a dog, to find and get rid of the snakes. Cats and dogs are often used to get rid of mice and snakes in more rural areas as they pose a threat to the snakes, keeping them from returning.
Purchase a sulfur solution from your local nursery for ridding your yard of snakes. Apply the sulfur to the area bordering your garden as directed on the label by sprinkling a small amount near the snake holes.
Purchase a strong snake repellent that contains crystal granules from your local home and garden retailer if the sulfur solution doesn't entirely keep the snakes away. Apply the repellent as directed on the label.
Call Animal Control if the problem with the snakes in your garden continues. This may be necessary for a large infestation of snakes, several nests or dangerous species of snakes.
