Care for New Sod

Overview

After you have spent the time and money planting new sod, you want to take care of it correctly so that it takes hold in the soil below it and grows into a healthy and plush green lawn. As soon as you have finished laying the sod, you need to start the care process and continue this routine for a couple of weeks so the root system can develop and produce a healthy lawn. There are two different care instructions to follow that depend on the weather temperatures.

Hot Temperature Care

Step 1

Apply water twice on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday. Water once a day on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday of week one. The soil should be wet at least 1/2 inch down.

Step 2

Water the sod once on Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday of the second week. Skip Friday and water once on Saturday. Make sure that you add enough water so that the soil is wet 1/2 inch down.

Step 3

Skip the Monday watering in the third week. Water the sod on Monday. Mow the sod on Tuesday. Water the grass on Wednesday. Skip the watering on Thursday and Friday and water once on Saturday. Water long enough so that the soil is wet 1/2 inch down.

Step 4

Water the sod once on Sunday of the fourth week. Skip Monday and water once again on Tuesday. Skip watering on Wednesday and water once on Thursday. Mow the grass on the Friday. Only take about 1 inch or less off the top. Water the sod once on Saturday, which will finish the strict watering and mowing schedule. Resume normal lawn care in the fifth week. Make sure the soil is wet at least 1 inch down each time because of the infrequent watering schedule.

Cooler Temperature Watering

Step 1

Apply water to the new sod during cooler temperatures for the first week twice a day on Sunday and Monday. On Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, water once a day, preferably in the morning. Skip watering on Saturday. Water long enough so that the soil is wet at least 1/2 inch down.

Step 2

Water the grass on Sunday once in the morning starting the second week. Skip Monday, water once on Tuesday and skip Wednesday. Water the new sod once on Thursday, skip Friday and water once on Saturday.

Step 3

Skip the watering on Sunday of the third week. Water the sod once on Monday and Thursday. Mow the grass on Tuesday, taking about 1/2 inch off the top.

Step 4

Water the sod once a day on Sunday and Thursday during the fourth week. Return to your normal lawn care schedule after the fourth week.

Tips and Warnings

  • Do not fertilize the sod in the first 60 days, but if the sod is older than 60 days in September, add lawn fertilizer.
