Overview

The expanse of green grass in landscapes, yards and parks serves as an attractive method of erosion control, as well as a soft surface for children and pets. With the numerous varieties of grass available, there are few climates unable to support this type of groundcover. Correct planting techniques and sufficient lawn care ensure the best possibility of growing a healthy lawn. Grow grass in your own yard by properly preparing the soil and providing some necessary elements.

Step 1

Perform a soil test. Purchase a soil test kit from your university extension office or gardening center. Follow the instructions when gathering the soil for the testing sample. Mail the test kit to the address included in the kit. Soil testing provides valuable information regarding nutrient composition of the soil in your selected area. Once you have received the test results, purchase any soil additives recommended by these results.

Step 2

Dig up any existing vegetation, such as weeds, bushes, flowers and groundcovers. Remove these plants before they have an opportunity to mature and produce seeds. Pull out large roots buried beneath the surface of the soil. Remove all rocks and other debris.

Step 3

Till the surface of your soil with a garden tiller, or use a shovel to break up the topsoil. Do not disturb soil beneath the top few inches. Avoid disturbing weed seeds lying dormant beneath the surface. Add the soil additives recommended by your soil test results. Mix all additives into the top few inches of loosened soil with a garden rake.

Step 4

Purchase grass seed recommended for your climate. Plant your grass seed in the spring after the final frost of the season. Follow all instructions on your package of grass seed. Water your new seed immediately after planting. Keep the grass seed slightly damp during germination and sprouting. Avoid walking on the tender new shoots until they reach a few inches in height.
