When you need to service your mower blades or belts, you can remove the mower deck for access. Mower decks connect to the mower with suspension arms and a front stabilizing linkage. The connections use cotter pins which will require the use of only one tool to remove. Once you disconnect the mower deck, the deck will pull out from the right side of the mower.
Park the riding lawn mower on a level surface. It is better to park the mower on the driveway or in the garage if possible. Place all the mower controls into the neutral positions. Set the brake on the mower.
Place two boards under each side of the mower deck. Adjust the deck lever to the lowest position.
Go to the left side of the mower deck to locate the belt tension rod, which will be on the upper left of the deck, and one end will be in a clip. Pull the tension rod out of the clip to disengage the belt tension.
Reach under the mower, and roll the deck belt off of the drive pulley. The pulley is in front of the mower deck. Find the front linkage on the front side of the drive pulley. Remove the cotter pin securing the front linkage with a pair of pliers.
Remove the cotter pins and washers securing the front suspension arm and rear suspension arms to the mower deck. The suspension arms come down from the bottom of the mower. The operator deck lever controls the suspension arms. Remove the front and rear suspension arm connections on the other side of the mower deck.
Go to the right rear of the mower deck to disconnect the sway bar, which is the bar that runs between the bracket that connects the two rear suspension arms. Remove the cotter pin with the pliers, and push the sway bar through the left side of the bracket. Go to the left side of the mower to pull the sway bar completely out.
Move the steering wheel on the lawn mower all the way to the left. Grab the deck lever with both hands, and position the lever to the fully up position. The deck lever is spring loaded, and with the deck no longer connecting to the lever, you need a tight grip when changing the deck position.
Pull the mower deck from under the right side of the mower.
