Roasting hickory nuts brings out their deep, nutty flavor. When toasted, these oil-rich nuts become crunchy, perfect for adding to any recipe as a substitute for pecans or walnuts. Look for hickory nuts in farmers markets in the eastern United States where the trees naturally grow, or harvest and shell your own hickory nuts. Use this same roasting method for all types of shelled nuts, including walnuts, pecans and hazelnuts.
Heat the oven to 350 degrees F.
Lay the shelled hickory nuts in a single layer on a baking pan.
Roast the hickory nuts at 350 degrees F for 10 to 15 minutes or until lightly browned.
Cool the nuts on the pan before using in your recipes. Or, store the nuts an air-tight container in the freezer for up to one month.
