Overview

Whether you grow your own succulent blackberries, pick them at a farm or buy them at the market, these delectable berries have a deep and sweet flavor that lends itself to almost any dessert. Prepare fresh blackberries by making a thick sauce to drizzle over ice cream, pound cake or eat alone for a delicious treat.

Step 1

Place the blackberries into a colander and wash them under cool water.

Step 2

Pour 2 cups of blackberries into the saucepan. Measure the sugar and water and add these ingredients to the blackberries. Stir well.

Step 3

Set the saucepan onto the burner at medium heat. Cover the saucepan and cook the blackberries for approximately three minutes.

Step 4

Remove the cover from the saucepan and stir the blackberries.

Step 5

Cover the saucepan again and reduce the heat to a simmer. Continue cooking the blackberries until they soften and the sugar and water turn into a thick syrup (approximately 10 minutes).

Step 6

Add the remaining 2 cups of blackberries to the saucepan and cook for one minute to heat these berries slightly. Remove the sauce from the heat.

Step 7

Taste the blackberry sauce. Add an additional 1 to 2 tsp. of sugar if it is not sweet enough. Add 1 to 2 drops of lemon juice to add a slight tartness to the sauce.

Step 8

Cool the blackberry sauce to room temperature and pour it into a plastic container. Store the sauce for three to four days in the refrigerator.
