Overview

Kaffir lime trees (Citrus hystrix) are native to Thailand, where temperatures are hot and humid. When you're selecting a Kaffir lime tree, purchase one that is larger and more established, such as a tree that comes in a 5- to 7-gallon planter container instead of a 1- to 2-gallon plant. A slightly larger, older Kaffir lime tree will be easier to grow successfully because it is already better established and will cope better when transplanted. Also, purchase a Kaffir lime tree in spring or summer instead of the fall, because the tree will acclimate to its new environment better when temperatures are warm.

Step 1

Select a planting site for your Kaffir lime tree that is in full to partial sunlight and is humid. Try to choose a sheltered location, such as next to your house under an overhanging eave.

Step 2

Plant your Kaffir lime tree in loamy, well-draining soil. Mix into the soil some organic compost to boost its ability to retain moisture and improve its drainage. Plant the tree so that the top of its root ball is above ground level.

Step 3

Water your Kaffir lime tree deeply but less frequently, especially during the first growing season. During the spring, summer and early fall, water your lime tree to soak the soil down around the root zone whenever the top 1-inch of soil around the lime tree becomes dry, usually once or twice a week.

Step 4

Spread a 2- to 3-inch layer of bark mulch around your Kaffir lime tree. The mulch will help to insulate the roots and retain moisture.

Step 5

Feed your Kaffir lime tree once every month during the growing season with a citrus tree fertilizer. Follow the dosage and application instructions on the label, and stop feeding the tree in early autumn.

Step 6

Keep an eye out for aphids and other insects attacking your Kaffir lime tree, as well as fungal diseases. When you see insects on your tree or notice the signs of fungal disease, such as leaf spots or shriveled, dropping leaves, immediately spray the tree with a solution of 2 ounces of pure neem oil to 1 gallon of water.

Step 7

Cover your Kaffir lime tree with a blanket or flannel sheet if nighttime temperatures are below freezing or frost threatens. Uncover the tree in the morning.

Tips and Warnings

  • Don't grow your Kaffir lime tree in the ground outdoors if your climate is colder and wintertime temperatures are frequently below 30 degrees Fahrenheit. Like most other citrus trees, the Kaffir lime is sensitive to frost and cannot withstand frequent freezing nighttime temperatures.
